New “Gummy Bear Mammary Implant”
About six years ago the FDA re-released the silicone gel mammary implant for use after a 15 year absence from the market. During those 15 years the saline inflatable implant was the only device available for augmentation. While the saline implant is a good device, several shortcomings are evident. Some of these implants have deflated over the years and probably more will over time. “Wrinkles” have been a problem particularly in thin patients with little soft tissue coverage of the implants. The new cohesive gel implant (called “gummy bears” by many patients) offer a good solution to these problems. The implant can literally be punctured or cut in half and will not leak. What Does an Augmentation Really Do to the Breast?
Frequently patients bring nude photos, often from Men’s magazines or from web sites to their augmentation mammoplasty consultation. The intent, naturally, is to give the surgeon some idea of what the patient desires in terms of size and shape. In actuality, trying to make an individual patient look like someone else is virtually impossible. As far as shape is concerned, all any implant can really do (including anatomic shapes) is to “augment,” meaning enlarge, the already existing shape.
