Hair Loss Treatment

Hair loss can be embarrassing, worrisome, and can affect your overall emotional wellbeing. While male pattern hair loss is most common, women can experience hair loss, too. Currently, there are only two medically certified drug treatments for hair loss: Propecia, which is a brand name for the drug Finasteride, and Rogaine, which contains a hair growth stimulating ingredient called Minoxidil.  Propecia is taken internally as a pill and can only be taken by men. Rogaine is a topical treatment and can be used by both men and women.

Male pattern hair loss is generally caused in men by a substance in the body called dihydrotestosterone, or DHT. Propecia can block DHT from destroying hair follicles, and it is effective in almost half of the men who take it. Studies have shown that most positive results will show within three months of taking Propecia, but sometimes it takes up to a year in order to see any noticeable results.

Unfortunately, Propecia is not an option for women who are experiencing hair loss. There are other options for women, including Rogaine, hair transplant surgery, or laser hair therapy. Many women ask about Vivisical, which is a natural health supplement that has not been medically tested. Like any other dietary supplement, you should take Viviscal with caution and only under the supervision of a doctor. Contact Plastic Surgeon, Dr. Gary Williamson, for a Free Consultation today!
