About six years ago the FDA re-released the silicone gel mammary implant for use after a 15 year absence from the market. During those 15 years the saline inflatable implant was the only device available for augmentation. While the saline implant is a good device, several shortcomings are evident. Some of these implants have deflated over the years and probably more will over time. “Wrinkles” have been a problem particularly in thin patients with little soft tissue coverage of the implants. The new cohesive gel implant (called “gummy bears” by many patients) offer a good solution to these problems. The implant can literally be punctured or cut in half and will not leak. This makes it infinitely better than the old style gel implant which could deteriorate or leak the thin liquid gel within the implant. The technological advances in the production and manufacture of these new implants is truly remarkable. Once you’ve held one in your hand and noticed its softness and ability to mimic the texture and feel of the human breasts, you will be amazed.
